There is nothing more frustrating than trying to sort through a page full of emails. On any given day there may be one out of ten that you really care about and the rest are advertisements or phony phishing schemes. Filtering out the spam will not only make your life easier but it is going to protect your computer from being infected with dangerous viruses or spyware.

The toughest part about blocking spam is figuring out exactly what it is. The most broad definition is that spam is the mass mailing of the same message to a number of different. It is the internet equivalent to junk mail sent to your home. Some of these messages may be of use to you, so ultimately each persons definition of spam is different. The best spam filters allow the user to set up what messages he does and does not want to enter his mailbox.

Most email programs come with a spam blocker of their own but, as we have seen, they do not always work very well. Electronic mail that you may be looking for can end up in your spam folder while messages you do not want slip through to the inbox. One good way to protect your personal email address is by creating another one that you use when registering for web sites and making internet purchases. This will make sure that if one company sells your address to another, your personal mailbox will not be affected.

You also want to check the settings on your spam filter to determine exactly what is being held back and what type of communications are being sent to the inbox. These can be adjusted to your personal preferences and you can add email addresses that you want to block out to your list at any time.
