Protecting Your Privacy Online

One of the greatest concerns of many internet users today is privacy.  There are so many different ways that privacy can be compromised while you are surfing the Internet.  Not only do you have to worry about your operating system or internet browser being unsecure, many websites use tracking cookies and other tools to keep an eye on what you are doing while you surf the Web.  Also, you can inadvertently share your information with those who may consider stealing your identity for making charges on your account if you give your information out to someone who uses phishing schemes.  Luckily, the people out there who actually do want to cause harm to you and invade your privacy are few and far between.  Also, there are many ways to protect yourself and your information when you are surfing the Web.

One way to protect your information online is to keep an eye out for phishing schemes.  Don’t ever give information out online unless you are one hundred percent certain of where the information is going to end up.  Many of the people who try to get you to give out your contact information are very good at making an e-mail look like it is from a legitimate company.  If you get an e-mail saying your bank information needs to be updated, don’t click the link in the e-mail. Instead, try calling your bank directly if you are worried that you may have a problem.

Another great way to protect yourself online is by installing a comprehensive security system on your computer.  Most of the companies that produce an anti-virus program also have a full a internet security suite.  These programs will protect you during all your activities on the Internet.  These programs can keep you from going to websites that may not be secure and will also scan your e-mail for possibly insecure communication.
